Some readers might forget that comics and graphic novels extend beyond superheroes and villains. Just like with other traditional novels, graphic novels come in a wide variety of genres and themes.

“This One Summer” created by cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki captures the life of young Rose. Every summer, Rose visits a lake house with her parents. The annual getaway has become the family’s refuge. It’s where Rose reconnects with her young friend Windy, the little sister she never had. But Rose is growing up and she’s beginning to notice more. She realizes her parents are fighting constantly, so she decides she and Windy need to find a distraction. What was meant to be a carefree summer soon becomes a summer of sadness and drama as the Tamaki’s illustrate adolescence with both words and beautiful images.

Fan’s of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” will appreciate this graphic novel consisting of five short horror stories. Not much can be said about these stories without giving everything away, but according to one Goodreads reviewer, “it’s…unsettling. It’s creepy. It’s like the darkest of the old-school faerie tales.”

Each story is illustrated beautifully and creatively enough to let the reader’s imagination run wild with wonder and mystification.

Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty

While the blurb makes this novel seem like a tense, murder-mystery drama, readers are praising Liane Moriarty for her witty and humorous writing. Like all good stories, it’s difficult to accurately describe it without giving the entire plot away, but essentially, “Big Little Lies” follows the interactions between three school moms. Madeline’s ex-husband and his new wife have just moved into her neighborhood, and she finds that her teenage daughter seems to be choosing her father’s new family over herself.

Celeste, the mother of rambunctious twin boys, has her sights set on becoming PTA royalty, but quickly realizes this role comes with a price. Young, single mom, Jane, is sad and – for some reason – harboring doubts about her son. As Madeline and Celeste bond with Jane, none of them realize how Jane’s arrival will affect all of their lives.
